Sailing planning, Tides & astronomical navigation - Astronomical navigation is the determination of position by measuring the height (angle) between one or more celestial bodies and the horizon. With knowledge of the location of the measured celestial body(s) on the celestial sphere, the time of observation and the measured height(s), one or more location lines can be determined and laid out on the map.
Astronomical navigation is based on astronomy, which is one of the oldest scientific disciplines, as man has studied the movement of celestial bodies for several thousand years in various cultures around the world.
