This book is intended to serve both as a textbook for curriculums at maritime educational institutions and as a reference book for ships officers and shipping company inspectors. The book provides an overview of the various international organizations that influence the regulations with which a ship needs to comply, as well as the certificates a ship must possess in order to prove that it complies with the said regulations. With regard to international organizations, emphasis has been placed on the IMO, the ILO and the classification societies, as well as the cooperation between the flag State and the classification societies. Furthermore, the book examines subjects such as the prevention of pollution, ISM, ISPS, safe manning and port State control with an emphasis on how the ship can avoid complications.
