Guide to Crude Oil Washing & Cargo Heating Criteria. This Guide supplies operational information designed to assist the command of crude oil tankers and the operations department of tanker companies. The Guide explains the IMO's recent amendments to Section 9 of the Crude Oil Washing (COW) Manual and supplies additional background information regarding the interpretation of these amendments. The Guide discusses the generalized layout of the COW system and methods used for this procedure on board a tanker and supplies ideas that will assist in the modification of procedures to minimize sludge build-up in tankers. In so doing a suggested heating criterion for various types of crude oils for COW and effective discharges also discussed.
